Description

To 20 cm.

Habitat

Lowland water bodies with soft bottoms and slow currents; prefers marshes, swamps, ponds, and rice paddies. Highly aquatic.

Found from the Nicabar Islands, Bangladesh, Assam, south through Burma, Thailand, Kampuchea, Vietnam, Malaya, east to Indonesia to Sulawesi and Amboina. Reaches the Philippines and Celebes.

A gentle, shy species.

Reproduction

Food

Mainly herbivorous in the wild. Captives learn to take various animal foods.
