Texas Tortoise (Gopherus berlandieri) post mortem

Texas Tortoise (Gopherus berlandieri) post mortem

This unfortunate Texas Tortoise did not survive as a long term improperly cared for "pet." This photo is post mortem. It was obviously kept indoors and fed a poor diet because of the pyramiding or lumps on the shell. This species is found commonly on roads in Northern Mexico and Southern Texas and then brought home for "pets." This tortoise is a Texas state threatened species and it is illegal to have one without proper permits from Texas Parks & Wildlife. The practice of taking these tortoises from their natural wild territories is partially responsible for them being threatened. Threatened is the next level under endangered. Usually tortoises that have been kept as captives can not be returned to the wild for fear of introducing new microorganisms into the wild populations. They therefore have to be placed on preserves where an individual or organization has educational permits from the state. At this time there are no permits granted to the general public for legal possession of the Texas Tortoise.

River Cooter (Pseudemys concinna texana)

Note deformed area due to old healed injury. Chipped margin on his right side is from a new injury. Due to the old deformed area, we figure this Cooter had his second mishap with a car. Found in Harris County, Texas and was eventually released back into the wild.
